Students at Fenmore Elementary School
arent writing out lines for punishment anymore, theyre
hunting vermin.
A new policy is in place at FES which
allows teachers to assign unruly children the task of killing
the rats that inhabit the school as punishment.
We used to make them sit for detentions,
or copy out books said school Principal Michael Humphries.
But since our school has a rat infestation, this just
seems to make more sense.
The number of rat carcasses that pupils
are required to present for their punishment depends on
the crime. Failure to do homework means three rats, general
misbehaving earns between two and five, while foul language
and chewing gum in class are each worth a single pelt.
A few parents have expressed concerns
over the policy. Someones going to get bitten,
said Dorothy Vreeker, a local mother.
Its a good policy,
defends Humphries. Not only has behaviour improved
over 80 per cent, but theres not nearly so many rats
running around anymore. PFC
