I’m a housepainter by trade, but an artist by temperament. I just finished a job for a guy and he says to me he hates it. He doesn’t like the colours, he doesn’t like the job. He says I’ve got no talent and I suck.

It really hurt my feelings. What should I do?

Dear Cornered,

Art is a very subjective matter. Believe it or not, there are some people who don’t like my column!

There’s just no accounting for some people’s tastes. If you want to be an artist, you have to grow a thick skin and be able to ignore the derision and hurtfulness of some people.

Then again, maybe he’s right. Maybe you’re not cut out for the life of an artist. Have you sought a second opinion? Send me a picture of your work. I’d be glad to tell you if you’re any good, or if you should seek a different line of work.
