I ask my mother’s opinion on everything, and I always listen to what she says, and I do everything she tells me.

If she doesn’t like one of my friends, I won’t see that person anymore. When I was in school, I took whatever courses she said I should take, and when I graduated I applied for the jobs she said I should apply for.

Now she’s telling me that I need to move out and be on my own. She thinks I need to learn to be more independent and not do whatever she says.

I don’t know what to do. If I do what she’s telling me to do, it means I can’t do what she tells me to do because she’s telling me not to do what she tells me to do.

Is this some kind of test? What should I do?

Dear Mama’s Boy,

Oh you darling creature, of course it’s a test.

You should always listen to your mother. Always. She’ll always know what’s best for you, and that’s why she is your mother.

But when she tells you not to listen to her, she doesn’t really mean it. She’s just feeling unloved for some reason. Try to think of what you’ve done wrong lately and make it better.

Then everything will be all right.

If only every child was like you the world would be a much better place.
