Banana Boom Strikes Paradise Falls

By Woodrow von Hammer

People are talking in the local grocer’s fruit aisle, and it’s not about the weather. It’s about bananas, because that’s all there is to talk about.

The Paradise Falls Supermarket, which usually stores a wide variety of fruits, is down to just one: bananas.

“It’s freakish,” said Paradise Falls grocer Simon Foster. “The fruit came in this week and it was only bananas. A great yellow plague is what it’s like.”

Erma Meyers, of the Meyers Apple Pie conglomerate in nearby Fenmore, is outraged. “I’m not in the banana pie business here. Someone has to fix this, or you can say goodbye to the Meyerses, I’ll tell you that for free.”

Not everyone is distressed by the so-called Banana Boom. Liz Eustace, who keeps a family of five spider monkeys in her yard at 33 Main Street, is delighted.

“This is the best thing that’s ever happened,” said Eustace. “Certainly a far cry from when the area was overwhelmed with turnips in ’93. Ever seen what a monkey will do to a turnip?” PFC
