Ask Shirley - Advice for everyday life.

Dear Shirley,

I am a woman living in a man’s body. I feel like I need to have the operation to become a woman for real before I can truly be myself, but I’m afraid. I don’t know how people will treat me afterwards. Nobody I talk to thinks it makes any sense. What should I do?

Signed,

Trapped in Temagami

Dear Trapped,

It’s not supposed to make sense. It’s not about logic, it’s about emotions. And I feel you should do what feels right to you.

Don’t worry about other people. Surely if they love you as a man, they’ll still love you as a woman. And the other way around.

There are some things about being a woman you should know first, before making such an important decision:

  1. Chivalry is dead. If you’re looking to get doors opened for you, forget it. It won’t happen. With gender equality we gained some things, but we lost some others.

  2. You’re going to need shoes. Lots of shoes. Not to mention belts and purses. Men can get away with wearing any old thing, but as a woman you must always accessorize properly.

  3. Learn to cry. At will. You’d be surprised what it can get you. Sure, people are nice to a crying man, but nobody can say no to woman in tears.

Good luck, Trapped.

Shirley
